Batik Ergodia reimagined Batik as an analogue for Singapore Literature; both resisting easy definitions, limning multiple cultures and histories, invoked in expressions of the traditional and the modern, simultaneously parochial and cosmopolitan. The project began with a study and sharing of the historical, visual-cultural and storytelling significance of traditional Batik and tracing developments in contemporary art practices using Batik as a medium. In doing so, the project sought to uncover ways in which Batik can transcend limited and limiting confinements of being primarily visual, and contestations of it being from any one nation-state or culture. Through the added lens of Ergodic literature, the project aims to uncover the creative potential that Batik has in unusual and lesser-known narrativisations and storytelling.

Batik Ergodia premiered on 29th March 2023 with an artist talk featuring collaborators Joanne Chow, Sean Francis Han and Sha Sharif (formerly Bras Basah Open). The showcase was homed in the EX-SITU in the residency studio spaces, within the Singapore Art Museum Corporate office.
