Community & Education Residency || 01 Oct to 31 Dec 2024
Arie SYARIFUDDIN, also known as Alghorie, works across multiple disciplines as an artist, curator and designer. A core member of Jatawangi art Factory (JaF), Arie shares the collective’s ethos of embracing contemporary art and cultural practices as discursive tools. Interested in destabilising conventions of normalcy, Arie’s work often negotiates the boundaries between fiction, dreams, reality and everyday life and its intersection with history.
While in residence, Arie will trace the interregional distribution of spices through the historical Temasek trade route. Through this research, Arie will bring to the fore the ways in which spices have entered our contemporary consciousness and examine the extent to which the intercultural confluence of Chinese, Indian, and Malay communities have influenced the proliferation of select spices and specific flavours in the Malay world.
