Rattan
Collection of the Artist
Like the holiday house that is made and remade in Virginia Woolf’s novel, the artist has deconstructed and recomposed an old rattan chair into a series of rattan sculptures that explore different ways of inhabiting space. In one piece, strands of rattan are attached to a block of wood, as though seeking to return to their original state. The handling of rattan in the other sculptures also speaks to forms of nesting and holding, variously enclosing itself like a cradle, functioning as a frame that simulates a window, and negotiating space like furniture in a small room.
