Jenna LEE

Artist Residency || 01 Jul to 30 Sep 2026

Jenna Lee is a Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman, and KarraJarri Aboriginal woman with Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo-Australian (Irish and Scottish) ancestry. Taking form as immersive installations, paper, sculpture and multimedia forms, Jenna’s practice explores language, materiality, and the transformation of inherited narratives. Examining the spaces between words—the felt but undocumented—she engages with the scars of history and cultural legacies. Through meticulous deconstruction and reconstructions in the reinterpretation of historical narratives, she reveals stories within materials that echo the past and uncover untold meanings and hidden forces shaping identity and memory, while inviting reflection on the complexities of inherited histories.

While in residence, Jenna will deepen her research on shared histories and connections across Aboriginal and Southeast Asian cultures through historical records, oral accounts and folklore. Specifically, she intends to speculate on a continued reciprocal partnership of cultural influence and trade between her northern Aboriginal ancestors and the Southeast Asian archipelago through the lens of seafaring traders.
